By Marco AquinoLIMA (Reuters) - The Peruvian government said on Friday it has awarded a subsidiary of Chinese firm Jinzhao a contract to build a port in the south of the Andean nation, expected to require $405 million in investments. As part of the deal, Jinzhao Peru will receive a concession to operate the port for 30 years, according to the head of state investment agency Proinversion, Jose Salardi. With the project, Jinzhao will become the second Chinese firm to build and operate a port in Peru, one of the world's top copper producers. In the north of Peru, a subsidiary of Chinese firm Cosco Shipping Ports is building a "megaport" set to kick off operations at the end of this year. Jinzhao's port, in the southern region of Ica, is near its Pampa de Pongo iron project, set to require a $2.34 billion investment in its "pre-feasibility stage."

CNN —The biggest inferno in Texas history is being fueled by winds and high temperatures as it rages Sunday, threatening to incinerate more buildings, cattle and livelihoods across the Texas Panhandle while residents sift through ashes of what used to be homes. The fire, which is just one of five blazes currently scorching the Texas Panhandle, has already killed two people and destroyed over 500 structures, state officials said Saturday. Texas A&M Forest Service spokesperson Jason Nedlo told CNN Saturday that the blaze could grow over the weekend due to the weather conditions. Because the Texas Panhandle had higher-than-average rainfall this winter, there is more grass – fuel – to burn. A “red flag” warning, which indicates critical fire weather conditions, remains in effect for Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle through midnight Sunday.

A vast and growing wildfire, one of several burning in the Texas Panhandle, has now become the largest on record in the state’s history, according to state figures on Thursday. The fire has scorched more than a million acres of land, devastating cattle ranches, consuming homes and continuing to rage out of control. One rancher, Jeff Chisum, described walking with surviving calves past the charred remains of adult cows scattered along a road. “It’s hard to watch,” said Mr. Chisum, whose ranch north of the town of Pampa and directly in the path of the fire ignited on Monday. It was only 3 percent contained on Thursday morning, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Rushdie’s new novel recounts the long life of Pampa Kampana, who creates an empire from magic seeds in 14th-century India. Her world is one of peace, where men and women are equal and all faiths welcome, but the story Rushdie tells is of a state that forever fails to live up to its ideals.

Populist Javier Milei, a libertarian economist and self-described “anarcho-capitalist,” won a presidential runoff election on Sunday with 55.7% of the vote. He said Monday that he would move quickly to privatize the country's state-owned media outlets and look to do the same with other public companies. “Everything that can be in the hands of the private sector will be in the hands of the private sector,” Milei told Bueno Aires station Radio Mitre. Experts immediately questioned how far Milei would get in fulfilling that vision without the support of Argentina's National Congress, where his party holds a relatively small share of seats. Monday was a public holiday in Argentina so financial markets weren’t open, but the stocks of Argentine companies that trade in New York soared.

Which is stronger will tip the balance of the South American country's presidential election on Sunday and may reshape its diplomatic ties, economic future, and the wider region's political fault lines. 'NOT MY FIRST CHOICE'Neither Massa or Milei goes into the second round with a strong mandate. "For me, neither of them represents the hopes that I have for the future of the country. This would likely put a brake on more radical reforms and force Massa or Milei to moderate. The powerful regional governors are also split between the Peronists and the main conservative coalition, with none allied to Milei.

Argentina's ruling Peronist party wins provincial elections
  + stars: | 2023-05-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
May 14 - Argentina's ruling Peronist party posted strong wins in elections Sunday, appearing to hold control over three provinces just months ahead of presidential elections in which support for the party is flagging. The results come as a relief to President Alberto Fernandez's ranks as economic unrest has shaken the party's hold over the country. Fernandez has said he is not seeking re-election, however a Peronist coalition is still aiming to hold onto power. Although the outcome is good news for the party, its fate in the presidential elections will likely be decided in more populous provinces, such as Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Mendoza. [1/3] Archaeologists work in the remains of an ancient ceremonial Inca bathroom, discovered in a sector known as Inkawasi (House of the Inca), at the archaeological site Huanuco Pampa, in Huanuco, Peru April 5, 2023. Found near the "House of the Inca" in the Huanuco Pampa archaeological zone in central Peru, local archaeologists believe that the bath may have served a religious purpose for high-ranking members of the Inca empire, which 500 years ago extended from southern Ecuador to the center of Chile. The Huanuco Pampa archaeological site is part of the Qhapaq Nan project, a complex 25,000-kilometer-long road network that linked Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. The road system was declared a World Heritage Site in 2014. Reporting by Marco Aquino; Writing by Sarah Morland; Editing by Aurora EllisOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
"The industry has incredible potential," said Gabriel Gimenez, director of the ARICCAME cannabis agency created in January this year, last week. Argentina is looking to build its domestic medical cannabis market and generate foreign currency through exports. In Santa Fe province, the medical cannabis research and development center (CIDCam), which has over 200 cannabis plants of various varieties, is expecting a second harvest this month. Pablo Fazio, president of the Argentine Chamber of Cannabis (ARGENCANN) and Pampa Hemp's co-founder, said demand could ignite a new domestic industry for products made from the raw material. The chamber comprises some 200 private firms either directly or indirectly linked to the industrial hemp and medical cannabis business.
The responses underline that even central banks, whose primary responsibility is fighting inflation, are not immune to staff dissatisfaction with the sharply rising cost of living. Results of IPSO's survey, which largely focused on pay and remote-working arrangements but also included questions about trust in the board, were sent to ECB staff on Tuesday in an email, seen by Reuters. INFLATION SURGE, PAY BATTLESThe survey was the first by IPSO to ask about trust in top management since Christine Lagarde took over as ECB President in late 2019. The most recent Bank of England staff survey, also conducted in 2019, showed 64% of respondents had "trust and confidence in the Bank's leadership". "The ECB might be preaching lower real wages, but this is not our stance as your staff union," it wrote in its message to ECB employees.
Results were sent to ECB staff on Tuesday in an email, seen by Reuters. An ECB spokesperson did not comment directly on IPSO's findings when asked but pointed to a separate staff survey, run by the ECB itself last year, showing that 83% of respondents were proud to work for the ECB and 72% would recommend it. The criticism by staff may sting because it relates to the core of the ECB's mission - wages and inflation. A similar IPSO survey of ECB staff, taken just before Lagarde's predecessor Mario Draghi stepped down, showed 54.5% of 735 respondents rated his presidency "very good" or "outstanding", with support for his policy measures even higher. "The ECB might be preaching lower real wages, but this is not our stance as your staff union," it wrote in its message to ECB employees.
